Sometimes we live in our own bubble and don’t realize how others are struggling. When I heard about Access Virginia and what they do, I thought about my own personal use of closed captioning on my tv. I thought about how I sometimes rewind something I’m watching, turn closed captioning on, just so I can catch what was said. My dad has always been hard of hearing, it seemed normal to me and never gave it a second thought. It wasn't until I heard how Access Virginia got started that I realized how frustrated my dad must have been throughout his life. Access Virginia was started because one hearing impaired individual wanted to experience live theater. She approached a court reporter to ask her if she would caption a show for her. It made me realize the bubble I've been in. I can go to Ferguson Center of the Arts, Chrysler Hall, Coliseum, Norfolk Scope, etc any time I want. Here's this person that can't. And the solution is so simple. Simple, but costs money. That's why we need your help. As we age, we naturally start losing our sight and hearing. Access Virginia is a nonprofit that everyone can benefit from at some point in time.
