More than 15 teams were creative in their fundraising efforts last year with race walkers, mask makers, canoeists, and milfoil fragment collectors, to yoyo tricksters; and thanks to more than 400 individuals, families, and local business owners who participated, we raised over $22,000. This is truly a testament to the importance of Moody Pond in the lives of our community neighbors. All proceeds from ‘The Moody Pond Challenge’ will be used to benefit the pond directly. At a cost of $1,500 per day for 2-divers and 1-tender, we’ve hired Invasive Solutions Dive Company to begin hand-harvesting and removing the Eurasian watermilfoil beginning in June 2021. We anticipate that it will take several years, with 2-3 weeks of hand-harvesting each year to get the EWM under control. We’re hoping that you will embrace the campaign enthusiastically and sign up to participate by choosing an activity, walking, running, biking, bagging peaks, reading, even sewing masks, anything you can think of, and encourage others to join you as a team or sponsor you. You will have the chance to be creative, to be inspired and to inspire others. Moody Pond is challenging you, and we’re confident you are up to the challenge. Celebrate the conclusion of the event on the pond at 'The Moody Pond Challenge Ice Cream Social'. We'll be serving ice cream, listening to local bands, and holding a silent auction, with items donated by local businesses. Everyone is welcome, and it's FREE for 'Challenge' participants; all others, $2.00 suggested donation. 401 Forest Hill Ave<br>401 Forest Hill Ave, Saranac Lake, NY 12983, USA

Story

In August 2018, Eurasian watermilfoil was detected in Moody Pond. This Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) spreads easily and grows at an alarming rate. It can form thick, floating mats of vegetation, clogging the water and hindering recreation. It would be a terrible shame to allow the pond to go the way of so many others, clogged with Eurasian watermilfoil all summer, stinking with rotting weeds as Autumn approaches, the native plants replaced by invasives, and the varieties and health of the fish changing. We’ve listened to consultants on how to best manage the watermilfoil infestation, and have decided on hand harvesting by divers. The health of this treasure is well worth preserving, and the Friends of Moody Pond are determined to preserve it.

The task will not be an easy one and it will be an expensive one. Our estimate is that we will require approximately $15,000 each year for at least three years. At a cost of $1,500 per day for 2-divers and 1-tender, we’ve hired Invasive Solutions Dive Company to begin hand-harvesting and removing the Eurasian watermilfoil beginning in June 2021.

Now is the time to start raising the funds for next year. We will hold our second annual benefit event, “Foil the Milfoil: The Moody Pond Challenge”, as a virtual fundraiser beginning July 10th. We are hoping that you will embrace the campaign enthusiastically and sign up to participate by choosing an activity, walking, running, biking, bagging peaks, reading, even sewing masks, anything you can think of, and encourage others to join you as a team or sponsor you. You will have the chance to be creative, to be inspired and to inspire others. All proceeds from ‘The Moody Pond Challenge’ will be used to benefit the pond directly.  Moody Pond is challenging you, and we’re confident you are up to the challenge.
