With the state of Florida facing a large backlog for intellectually and developmentally disabled community members seeking services, The Arc Nassau receives numerous inquiries from individuals seeking support. Our Life Skills Development program is supported through the Medicaid Waiver program of Florida. Current waitlists have created a 12-14 year wait for clients that desperately need services. As potential clients come to our organization, we find that not all of them have enrolled in the process to secure their Medicaid Waiver. The families either make the difficult decision to continue to wait for the waiver support or enter into a private pay agreement. This programming can add up quickly for clients and all too often the family can not support their client in the long term. This campaign would provide clients with a scholarship to help support their pursuit of Life Skills Development training.
Our in-house program assists clients with continuous learning Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 and 2:30. Transportation can be provided to our clients for an additional fee. Clients receive instruction on a rotating curriculum that focuses on social development, arts and crafts, gardening, health & wellness, personal advocacy, community inclusion, education, development of skills necessary for home and work-life situations. The cost per day per individual is currently $52 a day. Most clients choose to come 2-3 days per week. These costs become exhaustive quickly. Even when some clients are accepted through the Medicaid Waiver, their level of support might be 1-2 days a week. This campaign provides supplemental support for those clients and ensures their continued program participation.
