Jacquie Barone's Story

Art has always been part of my life, from a young child simply arranging seashells on the sand, to watching my mother spending hours mixing oils over her easel, to owning my own commercial art business and then on to inspiring  my own children to find their own artist within.

Some of the most touching moments with art was when I had the opportunity to volunteer to teach art in the elementary school.  One day a child told me they could not participate in the class because they were not an artist. I told him that  'Everyone is an artist. You just need to find it within you". Moments later the same child would create the most amazing piece of art along with a new sense of confidence and a smile on his face that could light up a room. That gift changed his world.

Art is a diverse range of human activities that expresses our individuality in the form of visual, audio and performing artworks. It allows one to express themselves, to go deep down to that emotional power within us. It also allows those who get to experience these artworks to find something within themselves and gives them the opportunity to learn and be inspired by others.

The Columbia Center for the Arts is a special place in our community where so many expressions of our human selves can create change in all that get the opportunity to experience it. It may come in the form of children art camps, dance and music performances, visual creations and so much more. In this trying time of quarantine and uncertainty, the arts and the Art Center are even more important than ever.  We need art to help guide us through this most difficult time, to help sooth our inner soul and to inspire us to grow and find the positive in what is to come.

So today as this fundraising campaign begins and I celebrate my 50 something Birthday, I ask that you too see the positive in art and in the Columbia Art Center and help me reach my fundraising goal and beyond and make art and human creativity prosper in our community. Together we can continue to make change, inspire and it would be the best birthday gift ever!

May you all find your "Artist" within.
