Knights of the Blind: Support the FREE White Cane Project and Training

In 1925, Helen Keller issued a powerful challenge to Lions Clubs International:
"Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness?"

The Lions answered — and continue to answer — that call.

The White Cane: A Symbol of Freedom

In 1921, veteran James Biggs painted his walking stick white to be more visible to traffic. In 1930, the Peoria Lions Club, led by George Bonham, introduced the modern white cane with a red band, a tool that became both a practical aid and a symbol of independence for those with vision loss.

The Lions championed White Cane Safety, advocated for legal protections, and launched White Cane Days to raise awareness and funds for sight-related causes. Their efforts led to White Cane Safety Day being officially recognized every October 15 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress in 1964.

Why It Matters

White canes are more than tools —
They are freedom.
They are independence.
They are connection to the world.
Without them, there is isolation.
