Who are we?

Plymouth County Genealogists, Inc. was founded in 1975 as part of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists; formerly known as the Plymouth County Chapter. The group was created by a dedicated group of people who envisioned a non-profit genealogical society with these three goals in mind:

1) furthering the advancement of genealogy as both a hobby and a profession
2) the encouragement of sharing accurate documentation
3) the exploration of new avenues of research.

After temporarily disbanding, the society was re-established in 1978 and incorporated in 1993, now going by Plymouth County Genealogists, Inc., with the goal of promoting general interest in genealogy while focusing special attention on the family histories and historical subjects relative to the Plymouth County area.

We need your help now more than ever! With online genealogy websites readily available for your research needs, Plymouth County Genealogists, Inc., is struggling to stay relevant in the vast sea of online resources. When we started in the 1990s we never could have foreseen the impact technology would have on genealogical research and how easily accessible vital records would become.

Why support us?

We provide monthly speakers free of charge to our members at the E. Bridgewater Public Library. The average cost of a speaker is about $200; we need support outside of membership fees to continue to provide PCGI and its members, family, and friends with monthly lectures, workshops, and gatherings.

Examples of past speakers include:

Diane MacLean Boumenot, who discussed the "Real Life of Vital Records" understanding when, where, and why vital records were created, and the changes in those practices over the years.

Dr. John Warner, Archivist of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, who discussed how to access records kept at the Massachusetts State Archives.

Christopher Daley, who discussed the first year after the colonists arrived in 1620 on the shores of Massachusetts.

Ronnie Hirschhorn, who presented "Resistance During the Holocaust and the Role of Jewish Women".

PCGI is an organization of people just like YOU who want to meet to discuss obstacles and successes with their genealogical research. Talking to people with common interests builds community and friendships that lasts for years to come. You never know, you may find a common ancestor.
