In 2021 we not only transitioned from Medicine Wheel Productions to SPOKE with a new identity, new home on Summer Street, and new leadership. We also:

  • Launched the WeSPOKE Gallery Talks with artists discussing their work in response to climate change, health disparities, and racial justice.
  • Created YouthSpeak, a paid digital storytelling program for more than 60 young people, most living in public housing, with the Boston Housing Authority.
  • Commemorated 25 years of creative placemaking in S. Boston’s Dorchester Heights neighborhood with an outdoor event to unveil a powerful new community art project: The 12 Steps at No Man’s Land,, a multicolored mosaic staircase created by teens from the Cushing House and Boston’s Ostiguy Recovery High School.
  • Worked alongside social service providers and teens to create a public art installation addressing the teen mental health crisis called Reaching Into Medfield on the campus of a former state mental hospital. One called the installation “a source of hope for how far we have come.”
  • Presented our 30th World AIDS Day art installation and vigil, Days Without Art: Touched in Times of Pandemic. More than 600 individuals experienced this epic work of collective memorial art, which garnered critical praise in the Boston Globeand other publications.

SPOKE’s success navigating the Covid-19 pandemic affirms that its commitment to catalyzing art’s unique power to heal and bridge cultural division is more necessary than ever. We could not have accomplished this without your support.

Thank you!
