My Journey: From Homelessness to Hope

My name is Marco Cardenas, and I am the founder of Pathfinders For Hope. My story is one of resilience, transformation, and a deep desire to give back to the community that once seemed so distant.

In 2020, life took an unexpected turn when the pandemic forced me to close my successful cleaning business in San Antonio. The loss of my livelihood led me down a path of depression, substance abuse, and eventually, homelessness. My girlfriend and I set out from Texas, hoping to find a new beginning, traveling through Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and finally California. Along the way, we faced numerous challenges, including the loss of both our vehicles, which made survival on the streets a harsh reality.

Living unhoused in San Diego, we endured the harsh judgments of society and the cold indifference of people passing by. The struggle was intense, and at times, I felt utterly hopeless. Despite this, I sought solace in learning, avidly watching videos by Dr. Jordan Peterson, Dr. Gabor Maté, and Dr. Romany. Their insights helped shift my mindset, offering me tools for mental clarity and self-improvement.

Our brief reprieve came with the acquisition of an RV, offering shelter for a few months until it, too, was taken from us. We found temporary refuge at "The Alpha Project" shelter. During this period of reflection and growth, I realized the power of changing one's mindset and decided to reach out to my family for help. With their support, I relocated to Fairfield, where I was able to rebuild my life from the ground up.

Now comfortably housed for two years, I have dedicated my life to helping others through Pathfinders For Hope. My nonprofit is committed to empowering the unsheltered, offering case management, and most importantly, teaching them the mindset transformation that was pivotal in my own recovery. We provide not just immediate assistance but also long-lasting change, fostering the belief that everyone has the potential to rise above their circumstances.
