Story

The Legal Clinic (TLC) was proud to host our annual benefit event on Wednesday, June 1st, 2022, at which the Guardians of Immigrant Justice award will be presented to three champions of immigrant advocacy in Hawai'i. A second event took place online Friday, June 24th. Photos from the June 1st Pau Hana are viewable on The Legal Clinic's Facebook page.

EVENT DETAILS

The Legal Clinic (TLC) hosted an in-person event on June 1st at Cafe Julia in downtown Honolulu, and an interactive livestreamed encore event on June 24th from 5 to 6 pm HST to honor three "Guardians of Immigrant Justice", to provide updates on TLCʻs work, and to raise funds for our nonprofit and immigration legal services (offered free of charge to Hawaiʻi residents with financial need). View the 6/24 online event - with remarks from "Guardian" honorees U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, immigration attorney John Egan, and KNDI Radio 1270 AM on TLC's Facebook page.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 by June 30th, 2022, to enable TLC to provide critical legal services year-round to low-income immigrants in Hawai'i. Donations are encouraged!

THE NEED

  • 1 out of 5 Hawai‘i residents is foreign-born, yet there are less than 8 full-time immigration attorneys providing free or low-income legal assistance in Hawai‘i.
  • Hawai‘i's immigrants help fuel our economy (tourism, healthcare, agriculture, etc.), contributing over $668.5 million in state & local taxes, and generating $385 million in annual revenue.
  • Over 60,000 Hawai‘i immigrants are lawful permanent residents and eligible for U.S. citizenship. Many just need help applying. Another 48,000+ may be out of status and could benefit from professional legal counsel.

ABOUT THE LEGAL CLINIC

The Legal Clinic is a nonprofit organization based in Hawaii that offers free or low-cost legal services to our immigrant community. We believe that immigrants seeking assistance with naturalization (citizenship) applications, asylum petitions, or family reunification are entitled to high-quality, experienced legal assistance. No one should be denied the help of a lawyer due to their inability to pay or due to their immigration status.
