2020 has been a year of global pandemic, social unrest, political turmoil and great uncertainty. But at Via we are continually inspired by the resilience and creativity of the community leaders with whom we work. Help us launch our year-end campaign as a celebration of our collective RESILIENCE.

Via International spent 2020 pivoting programs to meet the needs of the most disadvantaged, by listening to community leaders and supporting multiple grassroots efforts to keep people fed, sheltered and healthy. The long term goal of our work remains building healthy, self-sufficient and sustainable communities through compassion, solidarity and action.

This year, through donor contributions and through the perseverance and resilience of staff and community leaders, Via successfully launched VIA MIGRANTE, taking the lessons learned from our unique model of community development, and applying them in support of the newest populations of migrants arriving in Tijuana. Community leaders (“promotoras”) from our network have been busy the last six months, distributing over 14,000 meals in low-income neighborhoods, to shelters, and community centers for migrants and deportees. Likewise, Via has been funding the distribution of weekly food boxes to 50 families in the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This immediate response to the humanitarian crises would not have been possible without donor support, and without the tenacity and flexibility of grassroots leaders who demonstrate what true resilience looks like. This food aid program has helped to stabilize this population while moving toward the overarching goal of VIA - providing communities with the tools for long term self-sufficiency.
