Every year, 15 to 20 students join the Youth in Philanthropy Club at the High School.

Lily Hollenberg (co-President) "I joined Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) at the beginning of my sophomore year. What really drew me to YIP was the idea that although only in high school, I could still make a profound difference in the lives of others. Since joining, I, along with the other club members, have been able to collectively grant over twenty thousand dollars to local nonprofit organizations that are often in need of every dollar we give them. We are able to see first-hand how our hard work, fundraising, and time affects these organizations. I truly do not feel that I would be as conscientious and understanding of a person if not for the lessons I have learned through my time in YIP."

Sara Pollak (co-President) "Youth in Philanthropy is an amazing club at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School that’s filled with thoughtful and proactive students who strive to make a difference in their community. We devote our year to fundraising, learning about community needs, and then sending off our funds to local organizations that matter to us and our community. It is such an honor to be a part of such a meaningful process and to see how our club can provide for these nonprofits year after year. I have only been a part of YIP for half of my high school career, but whether you spend all four years with YIP or just one, YIP becomes your home. I am inspired and warmed by the hard work we all get done together, and I am so proud of what we have accomplished. We hope that you enjoy our virtual dance! Whether we take action up close or through a screen, Youth in Philanthropy is putting in our all for our community and to help out wherever and as much as we can. Thank you for helping us help others!"

Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) is a program at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School conducted in conjunction with the Acton-Boxborough United Way.  This innovative program provides students with direct, hands-on experience with all aspects of grant-making. Students gain knowledge and skills and an understanding of community needs and how to translate a passion for a cause into action.

The Youth in Philanthropy program consists of:

  • Training:  in philanthropy, nonprofits, community needs, and grant-making.
  • Fundraising.  The student group is collectively responsible for raising funds towards the $5,000 to $10,000 grant pool.
  • Grant-making. Students in YIP evaluate proposal requests for grants to local agencies and make site visits to applicant organizations. They then deliberate and present their funding recommendations to representatives of the United Way Board, school administrators, and parents.
  • Check Presentation.  At the end of the program, the students make a formal presentation of the grant awards to the school community and to the successful applicants.
  • Mentoring.  Each year’s continuing students act as mentors for the new students who join the program.

2019-20 School Year
