The Alexandria-Monroe Township Historical Society was started in 1979 by Max and Nancy Draper, Jim Donahue, Curt and Rosemary Ellis, John Noffze, and John and Marsha Madden. John Madden was the first president.

Our all-volunteer staff maintains and operates our free museum, presents in-person programs, and maintains collection materials unique to the local history of Monroe Township in Madison County (IN).

The AMTHS museum is located at 313 North Harrison (across from the New Horner's Hometown Market, formerly Cox's Supermarket). Examples of museum displays include Aladdin Lamps, Alexandria business memorabilia from Lippincott Glass, Kelly Axe, and the Union Traction Co. The AMTHS also maintains pictures, books, and artifacts from the local schools, churches, and organizations. The museum library includes extensive genealogical information.
