Mariola Schmid's Story

My grandmomma started leaving the stove on. She would walk into a room and forget why she was there. These are things lots of us tend to do. Then things progressed, she would become extremely emotional, seemingly out of nowhere and then be unable to articulate why she was crying.  When she almost burned the house down cooking breakfast in the middle of the night it was time to admit that she had Alzheimer’s. She was moved into an assisted living facility, shortly thereafter she passed away from complications of Alzheimer‘s.

My stepfather is a kind and gentle man. Veteran, father of two,
stepfather of four and generally one of the nicest people you’ll ever
meet. 18 months before COVID hit, he would stare off into space, then
forget what we were talking about, then he began to forget how to
complete every day tasks, and the disease has since progressed. He was
moved into a memory care facility 9 months before the pandemic. Then he
was isolated for almost a year and a half due to visitor
restrictions--wasn't even allowed to see his wife (my momma) of nearly
25 years.  He passed away May 6, 2021.

Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t stop there. As difficult and scary as it is for the individual, it is equally as scary and heartbreaking for the family. The spouses, the children, everyone is affected. Alzheimer’s is a diagnosis of loss, but it should not be a diagnosis of loneliness, together we can raise money to make a difference.

I will be playing for Team Blitz (the pink team) in the 2021 Team Pink v. The Blue
Crew powder-puff football game at the Cottonbowl!!
