Founded in 1996 by retired biology professor Dr. Harold Sims, the Catman2 shelter provides a model for innovative, humane sheltering of cats. We house around 30-60 cats at any time of the year. Annually, we rescue and place over 150 cats and continue to care for sanctuary cats.

We partner with the Humane Society of Jackson County (ARF) to provide deeply discounted spay/neuter services to residents of Jackson County, as well as Swain and Macon counties, and the Qualla Boundary (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians). This program includes TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) services and guidance on colony management.

In 2026, we will debut another life-saving pet retention program called Hap's Veterinary Assistance Fund, which will provide financial assistance to eligible cat owners experiencing financial challenges in acquiring necessary veterinary care for their cat.

In 2026, we will partner with the Jackson County Animal Shelter in creating a kitten foster program to increase positive outcomes for the most vulnerable kittens coming into the county shelter.
