Women's Rights

Lauren is a Givebutter Changemaker - an elite group of young movers and shakers around the world that inspire those around them to give back through the incredible work that they do for others. Learn more about Changemakers.

My name is Lauren, and I am passionate about music, art, advertising, and grammatical precision. I am an avid shower-singer and a friend to all dogs. I recently became a morning person, and - like a typical college student - I spend my days running between class and work. My Type A personality means that I do the best when I have a lot going on, so I spread myself across a variety of different projects. I am a Writing Consultant, a Student Ambassador (this is the fancy way to say "tour guide") at Saint John's University. I am a member of our on-campus ad agency, Category 5, as well as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. I studied abroad in Rome, Seville, and Paris last semester, so I can speak a touch of Italian, Spanish, and French (and bombard any willing audience with pictures). Recently, I helped create a workshop for multilingual discussion and organize a Women's Day through TEDx. On a lighter note, I am addicted to sushi and recycling.

What is the cause and/or organization that you are most passionate about?

I am passionate about women's rights.

Tell us more about your involvement with this cause.

I recently used my involvement in TEDx to create a Women's Day that was held on November 7th. This event facilitated a discussion on women's rights and issues, and will feature speakers who support women's causes.

Tell us about yourself.

I like to think of myself as an idea machine, because creative thinking is what I do best (I am an Advertising major at St. John's University). I sing, I make art, and I write really sad poems that nobody should ever read. When I'm not in class, I am at my job - which is fine by me because I love what I do! I am a Writing Consultant, so I help give people the tools to improve their writing. I am always the loudest person in the room, and if advertising doesn't pan out I would love to do stand-up.

Who in your life most inspires you and why?

My mom! She has given everything so that I can have the life and opportunities that I have. She is an artist, a singer, a motivator, my comic relief, and my best friend.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

I was walking through Austria when I saw graffiti on a wall that read: Love Mondays, hate your job. Although my goal is to love my career, I think it is important to reflect on what is really bothering you in life rather than simply assigning blame to a certain day. You have to take control over your life if you want to be happy!

What is your greatest achievement to date?

I am most proud of myself for moving to New York and starting a new life in an unfamiliar area. Then, I moved abroad for 5 months and lived in 3 different countries. If I can survive that, I can do anything.

Describe yourself in three words.

Loud. Outgoing. Passionate.

What does giving mean to you?

Giving means doing the most you can to help another person.
