Mia Hildebrandt, and I am a sophomore Civil Engineering major at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. I am currently on co-op this semester at an engineering firm in New York City.
What does giving mean to you?
Giving back to my community has influenced me, as well as my relationship with the world around me. It is a big reason why I chose to study engineering in college. At the end of the day, I want to know that I made the future brighter and people's lives a little bit easier. Favorite Books? This is a difficult question because I have so many. Last summer I read a lot of quality literature. Both The Kite Runner and Lord of the Flies resonated with me. Next on my list of books to read is The Handmaid's Tale. Also, as a Harry Potter fan, I love the fourth book...it's so good! Best advice you have ever received? "If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you." I see this quote whenever I am taking classes at my local YMCA. It applies not only to fitness, but also to academics and life itself. Life can be a struggle, but overcoming obstacles is what makes you strong. Your greatest achievement to date? One of my greatest achievements to date is starting an annual Teens for Jeans campaign to help teens in need. Teens for Jeans is a clothing drive that donates gently-worn jeans to young people in the community. Tell us more about your organization. As a Changemaker, I am passionate about promoting and educating individuals on the importance of gender equality. At Stevens, I am fortunate to surround myself with strong students who support one another. To promote more fairness on campus, I am in the process of starting an organization that promotes gender equality. I began a Planned Parenthood campaign through Givebutter to support an organization whose federal funding is in jeopardy. Planned Parenthood is important for women's access to affordable healthcare. To help spread the butter, I informed my church community through our weekly electronic newsletter about my campaign and received some great support. Moreover, I am fundraising through my sorority on campus and in the greater Hoboken community. Describe yourself in five words. Curious, adventurous, determined, musical, and happy. Some of my life goals and dreams. To publish a novel, ride in a hot air balloon, learn Mandarin, run a marathon...the list goes on and on! I think having a bucket list makes life interesting. Keep spreading the butter no matter where life takes you. What does the Givebutter movement mean to you? The Givebutter movement is about bringing people together to make a positive change in the world. In the digital age, spreading the butter is even easier. Crowdfunding is no easy feat, but with a little grit and fearlessness, one can go far. Givebutter is about looking at the world around you and putting yourself out there. Whether it is posting on social media or sending out mass emails and text messages, get the word out and take hold of the unique opportunity to be a Changemaker.
