How is Givebutter different from other crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe and Kickstarter?

GoFundMe and Kickstarter made crowdfunding famous when they launched 10 years ago, but now they are among the most outdated, expensive, and limited options available. How does Givebutter work?

Givebutter can help you raise money online by providing you (and every member of your organization, if you have one) with a unique link to collect donations, track progress, spread your message, engage with donors, and more. We offer a wide range of features that can be used to help make your fundraising efforts as successful as possible, and we also provide this service completely free. Do campaigns have to meet their goal to be funded?

Setting a goal is completely optional, and fundraisers keep all the money raised regardless of whether it is reached. They've earned it!

Who can use Givebutter?

Anyone! The majority of fundraisers on Givebutter are run by student organizations, nonprofits, sports teams, startups, and individuals - but the possibilities are truly endless.

How do I start a fundraiser?

Click here and follow the steps! The whole process takes only a few minutes and you'll be able edit the information at any time after creating your fundraiser.

Will Givebutter do my campaign promotion?

We occasionally feature campaigns on our blog, website and social media, but ultimately it is entirely up to the fundraiser to solicit donations.

How do I donate anonymously?

When making a donation, check the box next to your billing information that says “Make my donation anonymous." Your donation will appear on Givebutter under the name "Anonymous" and your information will not be shared with the organizer. Please note that names and message added in the "Customize Your Donation" section will always be displayed publicly in the support feed.

Why won't my donation go through?

Our payment processor may decline transactions based on a number of different factors. Please double-check that your information is correct and your internet is working properly. If you are still having issues please send us an email at hello@givebutter.com.

How do I request a refund for my donation?

Unfortunately, all transactions and payments made on Givebutter are final. This is to protect the fundraiser from withdrawing money we don't have. However, refunds may be issued in exceptional circumstances, at our sole discretion. We are not responsible for donations once they are withdrawn by a fundraising campaign's administrator. In this situation, all requests for refunds should be made directly to the campaign administrator. If you've recently made a donation and would like to see if we are able to process a refund, please forward your email receipt to hello@givebutter.com and let us know that you'd like a refund.

What credit cards do you accept?

We accept all major cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club.

What countries are supported?

You can donate from anywhere in the world! All donations are made in USD, and may be converted based on the currency of your bank. Be sure to check with your financial institution for more information on international transactions.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Donations are tax-deductible if your organization has 501c3 status with the IRS. If this is the case, we may request proof of 501c3 status, and your organization may be required to display information such as its EIN on your Givebutter fundraising page.

What countries and currencies are supported?

We are proud to say that people can donate from anywhere in the world. All donations are accepted in USD($), and will be converted accordingly based on each donor’s individual financial institution and location. In the case of international donations, these financial institutions may apply additional fees.

How do I issue tax-deductible receipts?

When someone donates, we will automatically generate a Thank You email and issue a receipt on your behalf. We encourage you to add your EIN to the customizable "Thank You" message in your dashboard to assist your donors with using these receipts for tax purposes.

Can donors give privately?

Yes, all donors have the option to donate anonymously. In these cases, you will only see their amount donated and receive no additional information.

How do I withdraw the money I’ve raised?

You can withdraw funds at any time through the dashboard by going to the "Payments" tab and clicking "Withdraw." If you have not yet linked your bank account, you will see a button that says “Link my bank account.” Once you click this and follow the steps provided, you will be able to withdraw funds.

Please note that our "Payments" tab is currently under maintenance until further notice. In the meantime, you can still receive the funds you've raised at any time by sending an email to hello@givebutter.com from the administrator's email associated with your account. If you'd like to receive a check in the mail, please include your mailing address and a name to make the check out to. If you'd prefer PayPal, please send your preferred PayPal email address.

When do the funds become available?

There is a 3 day holding period for all donations, which is necessary to ensure the funds are cleared through all necessary channels. These funds will show up in your dashboard as "Pending balance." Exactly 72 hours after a donation is made, the funds will be made available to be withdrawn.

How often can I withdraw funds?

As often as you'd like, as long as there are funds available!

I don’t want to link my bank account, can I receive a check?

Yes! Go to the "Payments" tab in the dashboard and click "Request a check." We will mail you a check with your available balance within 24 hours. Please note that you will not be able to withdraw funds until the check is mailed, which can take up to 24 hours. Checks are sent with standard shipping, and will take 3-5 business days to arrive. We cannot mail checks outside of the continental United States.

What does it cost to run a Givebutter campaign?

It’s completely free to run a Givebutter campaign! You will never see a bill from us. Unless we hire someone named Bill.

Does my campaign have to meet its goal in order to receive the donations (i.e. all-or-nothing)?

No, you will keep the amount raised regardless of whether you meet your goal. You’ve earned it!

Are my donors charged any fees?

Donors are given the option to extend their donation to cover the platform and transaction fees, and over 95% of them choose to do so. This means that fundraisers keep an average of $99.50 for every $100 donated (a 0.5% average fee for fundraisers).

We scale our fees so that the most generous donors have the lowest possible burden. Learn more about our fees and how fee scaling works here.

Are donations secure?

Givebutter campaigns utilizes the world’s very best payment encryption technology and security. Payments are processed securely through Stripe, which is where the funds are held until they are ready to be withdrawn. We never see donors’ credit card information, and take every measure to protect their personal information.

Are bank transfers secure?

Bank transfers are performed using Stripe Connect, which provides a highly secure and reliable ACH transfer service.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Many fundraisers on Givebutter are 501c3 status organizations, meaning that their donations are tax-deductible. Givebutter automatically issues receipts on behalf of every fundraiser on Givebutter, and if the beneficiary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit then the receipts may be used for a tax deduction.
