What is Givebutter?

Givebutter was built by students, for students, to provide the most engaging and effective fundraising platform on the planet. Giving is a beautiful thing, but online giving focuses too much on the transaction. Givebutter is perfect for any individual or organization, big or small, looking for a beautiful online fundraising experience.

Do you have a mission statement?

Givebutter is a mission-driven company. Our mission is to make the world a butter place by inspiring people to make giving a part of their lives. Our mission drives every action we take: from having a revolutionary, donor-centric fundraising product to offering the lowest and most transparent fees in the industry.

How is Givebutter different from websites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe?

Kickstarter and GoFundMe made crowdfunding famous, but now there are countless clones out there that differentiate on fee structure alone.

Unlike other crowdfunding websites, Givebutter focuses on building a community of donors vs. simply facilitating a transaction. We have lower fees - the average fee for fundraisers is only 0.5% since 95% of donors on Givebutter choose to cover our small fee. And Givebutter is optimized for team fundraising - Fundraisers can track, manage, and motivate the members of their organization to raise even more.

Can I see some examples of Givebutter campaigns?

Many new Givebutter campaigns are launched each day for causes ranging from a student at USC giving every child glasses who needs them to an ex-marine and cancer survivor raising money for his nonprofit to a student org fundraising to bring speakers to campus, fund a fellowship program, and more.

Do campaigns have to meet their goal to be funded?

No, fundraisers keep all the money raised regardless of whether they reach their goal. They've earned it!

How can I run a successful Givebutter campaign?

The most important aspect to successful Givebutter campaign is what we call "the ask." We've found that direct messaging is crucial, and that a majority of people give simply because "a friend asked me to." Make sure to fill up the Giving Spaces early, and encourage donors to share the campaign after donating. It’s our job to make the giving experience fun and social to maximize the success of your campaign, and it's your job to make sure that everyone you know sees your campaign.

The most successful campaigns:
1. Send the campaign individually to their closest supporters
2. Encourage them to create Giving Spaces and share their support on Facebook
3. Fill the grid of Giving Spaces as soon as possible
4. Share the campaign on Facebook and on all of their social media channels every day by tagging donors and publicly thanking them for their support.

Will Givebutter do my campaign promotion?

We occasionally feature campaigns on our blog, website and social media, but ultimately it is entirely up to the fundraiser to solicit donations.

What are Giving Spaces?

Giving Spaces are a place for donors to show their support by uploading a message, photo, drawing, or GIF to the campaign and sharing it with the rest of the world.

What is a Giving Space?

Giving Spaces are a place for you to show your support for the cause you are donating to, and to share with the rest of the world. You have the option to upload a photo, make a drawing, or upload a GIF to go along with a message of support for the fundraiser. Be sure to share your Giving Space after donating!

What size photo should I upload?

Uploading square photos is most ideal to ensure that your photo is not cut off. Givebutter will automatically compress and center your photo, no matter the size.

How can I make a Giving Space?

Easy-peasy. Hit "Donate Now" when you are ready to donate, and after writing a message of support you will be prompted to upload a photo, make a drawing, or upload a GIF. Choose one of the options, follow the instructions (if any), and wah-lah! As soon as you complete your donation, your Giving Space will become live on Givebutter.

My Giving Space is not showing up. Why?

The most likely reason is that your Giving Space was flagged by Givebutter or the fundraiser. If you feel this was a mistake, please contact us at hello@givebutter.com.

How do I donate anonymously?

When making a donation, check the box that says “Hide my donation from public view” at checkout. Your donation will appear on Givebutter under the name "Anonymous." Your information is shared with the fundraiser but is hidden from the public campaign page. You also have the option to hide your name and donation amount when creating a Giving Space.

Why won't my donation go through?

Our payment processor may decline transactions based on a number of different factors. Please double-check that your information is correct and your internet is working properly. If you are still having issues please send us an email at hello@givebutter.com.

How do I request a refund for my donation?

Unfortunately, all transactions and payments made on Givebutter are final. This is to protect the fundraiser from withdrawing money we don't have. However, refunds may be issued in exceptional circumstances, at our sole discretion. We are not responsible for donations once they are withdrawn by a fundraising campaign's administrator. In this situation, all requests for refunds should be made directly to the campaign administrator. If you've recently made a donation and would like to see if we are able to process a refund, please forward your email receipt to hello@givebutter.com and let us know that you'd like a refund.

What credit cards do you accept?

We accept all major cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club.

What countries are supported?

You can donate from anywhere in the world! All donations are made in USD, and may be converted based on the currency of your bank. Be sure to check with your financial institution for more information on international transactions.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Donations are tax-deductible if your organization has 501c3 status with the IRS. If this is the case, we may request proof of 501c3 status, and your organization may be required to display information such as its EIN on your Givebutter fundraising page.

What countries and currencies are supported?

We are proud to say that people can donate from anywhere in the world. All donations are accepted in USD($), and will be converted accordingly based on each donor’s individual financial institution and location. In the case of international donations, these financial institutions may apply additional fees.

How do I issue tax-deductible receipts?

You don’t, we do! When someone donates, we will automatically generate a Thank You email and issue a tax-deductible receipt on your behalf.

Can donors give privately?

Yes, all donors have the option to hide their information from public view. You will still collect the donor’s name, email address, and amount donated.

How do I withdraw the money I’ve raised?

You can withdraw funds at any time through the dashboard by going to the "Payments" tab and clicking "Withdraw." If you have not yet linked your bank account, you will see a button that says “Link my bank account.” Once you click this and follow the steps provided, you will be able to withdraw funds. You may need to add a representative as well to verify your account in order to withdraw funds, which can be done by clicking the "Add a Representative" button in the Payments tab.

When do the funds become available?

There is a 3 day holding period for all donations, which is necessary to ensure the funds are cleared through all necessary channels. These funds will show up in your dashboard as "Pending balance." Exactly 72 hours after a donation is made, the funds will be made available to be withdrawn.

How often can I withdraw funds?

As often as you'd like, as long as there are funds available!

I don’t want to link my bank account, can I receive a check?

Yes! Go to the "Payments" tab in the dashboard and click "Request a check." We will mail you a check with your available balance within 24 hours. Please note that you will not be able to withdraw funds until the check is mailed, which can take up to 24 hours. Checks are sent with standard shipping, and will take 3-5 business days to arrive. We cannot mail checks outside of the continental United States.

What does it cost to run a Givebutter campaign?

It’s completely free to run a Givebutter campaign! You will never see a bill from us. Unless we hire someone named Bill.

Does my campaign have to meet its goal in order to receive the donations (i.e. all-or-nothing)?

No, you will keep the amount raised regardless of whether you meet your goal. You’ve earned it!

Are my donors charged any fees?

Donors are given the option to extend their donation to cover the platform and transaction fees, and over 95% of them choose to do so. This means that fundraisers keep an average of $99.50 for every $100 donated (a 0.5% average fee for fundraisers).

We also scale fees, so that the most generous donors have the lowest burden possible. Learn more about fee scaling here.

Are donations secure?

Givebutter campaigns utilizes the world’s very best payment encryption technology and security. Payments are processed securely through Stripe, which is where the funds are held until they are ready to be withdrawn. We never see donors’ credit card information, and take every measure to protect their personal information.

Are bank transfers secure?

Bank transfers are performed using Stripe Connect, which provides a highly secure and reliable ACH transfer service.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Many fundraisers on Givebutter are 501c3 status organizations, meaning that their donations are tax-deductible. Givebutter issues tax receipts on behalf of these organizations, and the receipts may be used for a tax deduction.
