The Space

Once a trashed old sock factory and now a Soho House, the May Hosiery building in Nashville’s Wedgwood Houston neighborhood has gone through some insane transitions. Before the shimmer of the pool in the parking lot and the $25 cocktails being doled out to Soho members, the building was fixed up and made into a member based makers space by four artists and friends; Ryan Schemmel, Josh Cooper, Dan Heering, and Zach Duensing. They threw parties to keep their doors open, lived on PBR and Jets Pizza, encouraged their members to teach classes on woodworking, film development, screen printing, jewelry making, you name it, all to compensate for their monthly membership rate. They gave countless tours to the suits and developers coming through the neighborhood wanting to capitalize on what they had built.

They knew that community couldn’t be forced, it had to be cultivated and inevitably, with that cultivation, came attraction and then development. They didn’t just make things. They made a place. And that place propelled Nashville into a new era.

The Filmmakers

Archaea is a full service Emmy Nominated media production company founded by brothers and Nashville natives Andrew and Josh Duensing. They strive to make documentaries that evoke the cinematic power of narrative and narratives that evoke the authenticity and immediacy of documentary. Archaea and Producer/Director Leah Steltenpohl are teaming up for the making of this film, combining years of experience in the field and within the walls of Fort Houston.
