From April 27 through May 31, 2021, I invite you to support Ignite Momentum as we raise the last $150,000 towards the Momentum One Million Dollar Challenge. Gifts of all sizes support McColl Center’s innovative growth; energized by an engaged community of contemporary artists, arts advocates, cultural and corporate partners, and an enthusiastic and curious public.

Your gift today will be matched dollar for dollar. $50 turns into $100, $250 into $500, $1,000 into $2,000. Your donation will directly support the countless artists that look to McColl Center for partnership in developing and propelling their creative practices and careers.

In the short time I have been with McColl Center so far, I have seen the power of our mission and the impact we make on the lives and careers of the myriad of artists with which we partner. I’ve seen firsthand how our community is able to connect directly with the artists, help them create works, ask questions, and assist in affecting real change through partnerships with community organizations. Though the pandemic has proven to be an extremely challenging time for arts organizations in Charlotte and around the country, we’ve doubled down our efforts to support regional artists while remaining flexible and innovative. We’ve continued paying artists for their creative services and helping get their work seen and sold. We’ve adjusted programming to be accessible through virtual participation by providing free or pay-what-you-can admissions. We’ve taken extra measures to ensure the safety of our artists and patrons is top priority when we reopened after a 12-month COVID-related closure. And most importantly, McColl Center has remained steadfast in our vision of a thriving community where contemporary artists and an engaged public enhance their creative capacity through relevant, diverse, and accessible experiences.

As we look to the future at McColl Center, we are excited to launch new programs to continue our mission to champion contemporary artists like, for example, our newly launched artist co-op and studio rentals which provides affordable co-working spaces and private workspaces for local artists. It is through the support of our community that its possible for us to subsidize these spaces and provide shared art labs that give artists access to state-of-the-art equipment and resources like a 3D printer and laser cutter. These updates complement our nationally acclaimed artist residency program while opening the building, and our resources, to regional artists at an affordable rate. Together, we will fulfill your vision for making Charlotte a vibrant center for creativity. McColl Center cannot continue building a thriving network of artists and art lovers without the support of our friends.

Will you consider joining the McColl Center Igniters community by making a gift of $50 or more today? Through your generous support, you will spark a bright path for the next 20 years of McColl Center. Your gift today will make twice the impact. Thanks to the generosity of the McColl Family: $100 becomes $200, $250 turns into $500, and so forth. Will you help me reach it by donating today?

IGNITE NITE

May 20, 2021 | 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Ignite Nite is a celebration of Charlotte’s creative community, inviting artists, community members, and art lovers to come together for a citywide evening to spark creativity. This hybrid in-person and virtual event fuses 20 local artists with groups of 10-12 art lovers to create works of art together as part of a Citywide Art Lab.

Each group will receive the same materials to create something truly unique from the artist’s vision. Depending on the selection of the materials, one group may build mini sculptures while another may create a collage or painting. There are three options to participate: in-person at McColl Center, hosted at a group Champion’s home, or at any location virtually. The program will be live-streamed and will include an opportunity to join McColl Center’s Igniters community by donating to the Ignite Momentum campaign. Don't have a group Champion? No worries! We have open groups available!

About McColl Center

McColl Center for Art + Innovation champions contemporary artists and sparks creative experiences for positive community impact. McColl Center advances our mission through Artist Residencies, Exhibitions, Community Engagement, and Education. We envision a community where contemporary artists and an engaged public enhance their creative capacity through relevant, diverse, and accessible experiences.

McColl Center is a nationally recognized artist residency and contemporary art space in Charlotte, NC. Since 1999 we have provided over 420 artists with the time, space, financial support, and opportunities to explore ideas, build community, and grow their practices. We also invite the public to connect with artists through studio visits, exhibitions, public programs, artist-led workshops, and special events.

In addition to the use of studios and equipment in our shared-use spaces and access to 5,000 square feet of exhibition space; McColl Center Artists-in-Residence receive a generous stipend, private housing, curatorial guidance, marketing support, and local transportation. The program is open to local, national, and international artists working in a myriad of creative practices. Each application review panel is comprised of curators, alumni artists, national artists, and arts leaders.

While the residency program is central to our mission, being a resource for local artists is equally important to our core values. In 2020 we launched SPARK, a multi-faceted strategic plan that focuses on meeting artists, and our community, where they are, and a commitment to being an accessible home to artists at all points in their careers. Through SPARK, we renovated two studios to create nine smaller studios that are available for subsidized rent by local artists. We have also developed a Co-op; a coworking model where artists can access the equipment in our labs while building community among and collaborating with their creative colleagues. All too often, space and equipment are a barrier to artistic success; we are committed to working on reducing those barriers for artists.
