Purpose

The purpose of IFWE is to support the personal, social, academic, and leadership development of women from the Delaware Valley who represent diverse backgrounds. IFWE is designed to support women in making life choices and creating their lives as they want them to be.

This educational program is also designed to assist participants in recognizing and changing behavior patterns; improve communication with family members; and develop a sense of self-empowerment and responsibility that would positively impact their personal and academic growth and development. Through a structured curriculum, the Institute for Women’s Empowerment will examine the various perspectives on the meaning of empowerment and assist in developing the skills and strategies for confronting issues and making life changes through skills building workshops, leadership training and activities, conferences, and seminars.

Our History

IFWE emerged as the result of a growing demand for programs and services designed to meet the developmental needs of women who are struggling with issues that affect their ability to become

self-empowered and achieve in a variety of arenas. It is the outgrowth of a practicum research study conducted in spring 2004 that examined the Impact of a Pilot Women’s Empowerment Program on Female College Students. The pilot program employed a curriculum that was designed to reflect on current issues and themes that focus on empowerment. Seven interactive workshops were held over a seven-week period. During the seven weeks, participants were required to attend half-day Saturday sessions.

Moving forward, IFWE will expand to incorporate an interactive program format for diverse women. The program will incorporate the participation of skilled workshop leaders, local experts, and Board members. IFWE will be positioned as a prime source of guaranteed intensive skills development, problem solving, consciousness-raising, and hands-on experiential learning designed to empower the lives of each woman who participates in the program. This model offers an innovative approach that will challenge women to consider and prioritize their options, exercise the freedom of choice, and create their lives as they want them to be.
