Cary "Nighthawk" Facer's Story

Nighthawk here...

I'm back for my 4th year raising money for kids! This year we have 100+ Growers! I've podiumed all the 3 years but this may be the year I don't. I’m worried. Scared. Anxious. However, with your help you may keep me on the podium once again. Where WE belong.

Your donation will go directly to support Camp Conrad Chinnock who support children with Type 1 diabetes and their families. When kids are told they have this disease, they are given a life changing diagnosis. Their life becomes a full-time balancing act requiring constant attention to avoid life-threatening hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or the long-term damage done by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Blood sugar levels must be monitored either with finger pricks or a continuous glucose monitor. Insulin doses must then be carefully calculated based upon activity and stress levels, food intake, illness, and additional factors. These calculations are rarely perfect resulting in a tremendous emotional and mental burden for both patients and caregivers.

Cary attended camp and when he returned, he told me what he’d seen first hand...

“What an amazing experience this is for the children and families. They have nurses on staff, they train the kids and parents how to inject, how to manage the injection sites, manage their pumps, and to safely "ride the wave" (stay within safe range). Parents and kids have to check their numbers every 3 hours, every day, for the rest of their lives. Imagine that for a moment, 12 am, 3 am, 6 am, 9am, noon, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, midnight, 3am, over and over again. Every day. Camp allows these children to know they are not alone. They're surrounded with other kids, with the same autoimmune disease. Camp has a zip line, hikes, rock wall, pool, archery/bb gun range, crafts, camp fires, mess hall... all the things! Until there's a cure, there is camp!”

Thank you for your support!
