What You'll Learn

The workshop begins with a warm welcome and introduction to the fundamental importance of oral histories in preserving community memories, cultural traditions, and personal experiences that might otherwise be lost to time. Expert facilitator Greg will explore how oral histories serve as powerful tools for education, healing, and connection across generations.

Participants will then receive detailed instruction from Warren Nishimoto on the practical techniques of conducting effective oral interviews, including preparation strategies, question formulation, active listening skills, and creating a comfortable environment for storytellers.

Hands-On Experience

The heart of this workshop lies in its practical application. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct 20 real oral interviews throughout the day, working in small groups of 7-8 interviewers. This extensive practice allows attendees to immediately apply newly learned techniques, build confidence, and refine their interviewing skills in a supportive environment.
