Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that often comes with severe, life-altering illness, complications, and poor quality of life for patients and their families. Many times, it strikes teens and young adults in the prime of their lives and, increasingly, it is being diagnosed in children and in the elderly. Crohn's is a chronic and often progressive disease for which there is NO proven cause(s) and NO cure -- only treatments like drugs and surgery, usually with a temporary benefit. Many drugs for Crohn's suppress the immune system and have serious risks such as cancer and infection, frequently cause detrimental side effects, and don't work for many patients. Patients often go through rounds of one or more immunosuppressants and surgeries. This trial and error strategy that fails the majority of patients is unsatisfactory and we need better for kids, teens, young adults, working parents, the elderly, and their families. To date, no coordinated effort has EVER been made to map out the "knowns" and "unknowns" of Crohn's disease and to devise a research strategy to address our key knowledge gaps. Propel a Cure's Roadmap to a Cure for Crohn's is our opportunity to have the brightest research minds in the world come together to: (1) Systematize what we know across fields like genetics, immunology, the microbiome, and more; (2) Identify what is missing as well as barriers and challenges; and (3) Develop a detailed research plan to CURE Crohn's.
