Across the United States, more than 20 million pets live in households facing poverty, and in underserved communities, nearly 70% of pets have never seen a veterinarian. In North Carolina, shelter intakes and euthanasia continue to rise—fueled in large part by families who simply can’t afford food, transportation, or basic medical care for the pets they love.

These numbers tell a painful truth: most surrenders aren’t about a lack of love. They’re about a lack of access.

We created Small Wonders Animal Society to help change that.

We work to keep pets safe, healthy, and home—right where they belong. Our team helps families access essential medical care, spay/neuter services, food, and other critical supplies so they never have to choose between caring for their animals and meeting their own basic needs. Each small intervention helps to prevent unnecessary suffering, reduce shelter crowding, and keep families whole.

Our commitment is simple: meet people where they are, offer practical help without judgment, and help ensure no pet is surrendered or denied care because their family is struggling.
