The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center is a 501C3 nonprofit located in Dickinson, Texas but serves surrounding small communities in Galveston County as well as Dickinson. Our programing includes an after-school music program that provides free music lessons for economically underprivileged children in the communities we serve. The lessons are for beginners in 4th and 5th grade as well as ongoing intermediate, advanced and artist level lessons for established band members from 6th grade up to 12th grade. We provide all the necessary materials as well as free instruments for those kids who successfully complete at least one year of our beginners' program and continue to enroll in the 6th-grade band program of our local ISD.
We started this organization on the heels of a tragic accident in one of those underserved neighborhoods where a young lady that was a member of the local H.S. band was struck by a hit and run driver on an unlit street with no sidewalks. According to her family she loved the clarinet, she loved being in the band with her friends and playing music brought her great joy. I was deeply affected by what happened to her because it could have easily been my son. I felt a need to honor this young lady’s short but powerful legacy. My response was to bring other kids in underserved areas like the one we lost her in the same joy and opportunity she received from music.
The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center Is the only totally free afterschool music program for underserved kids in the state of texas. We have developed and nurtured collaborations with local political bodies and other civic organizations in the Dickinson area such as the Dickinson Management District (startup funding provided), The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (use of classrooms on their campus for lessons), The Dickinson Public Library (use of library facilities for instrument donation drive), The Dickinson Art Guild (art auction collaboration of art created from broken musical instruments).
