You're Invited to a Kitten Shower!

Friends of Companion Animals, Monroe County's all-cat rescue, is throwing a 'baby cat' shower (aka kitten shower).

Come visit us and show some love to all the new kittens that will becoming to us this season by donating items they really need. Doors open at noon until 5 pm Saturday June 2th and we'll have games, dollar raffles, FREE refreshments and door prizes. We'll even have a bake sale so you can take home some tasty treats for yourself!

Plus, everyone who brings a 35 lb of Tidy Cat clumping litter, Arm & Hammer Slide litter, a bag of Purina Kitten Chow 13 lb or larger, KMR kitten powder formula (12 oz. +) or a case of Fancy Feast 'kitten' food will be entered to win a $25 Kroger card.

The more items you bring us, the more you're entered into the drawing (and the more kittens you'll help this season!).

**Just so there are no surprises, our fundraising software Givebutter asks for a donation at checkout but you can turn it off. You'll see the following info in your cart at checkout: 'An optional tip allows FRIENDS OF COMPANION ANIMALS to use Givebutter's 100% free fundraising platform and keeps it running for all nonprofits. Thank you! ' To avoid this, change the percentage amount to 'other' and then put in '0' as the amount to avoid this charge. If you can make a donation of some kind to Givebutter that's great since it's been a dependable program, but if not, that's okay too.

The Story of Lilac and Blossom

Momma Lilac was found by some Lowe's workers at the Monroe MI garden center. She had given birth in a stacked up roll of plastic lawn edging.

it was late winter/early spring so the temperatures were very cold and although she was trying her best to care for the four (4) kittens she birthed, the constant activity in the garden center kept pushing her away from them. Not knowing the social status of Lilac, the TNR team tried to trap her but the activity made her skittish. They realized using her own kittens to trap her won't work. So our team pulled the babies and put a recording of the cries of former FOCA kitten, Jeffrey Michael, to lure mom into the live trap. Playing audio is important. The reason is if you pull kittens and mom can't see or hear them, she'll often leave the area. But we needed to make sure we collected mom too. The good news is it worked and mom was secured!

Unfortunately, that's not where the story ends.

She had given birth to four kittens but one passed and two others were extremely ill and passed shortly after being secured. A TNR team member named them posthumously Bluebell, Balsam and Billy Button (all flower names). Rescue is hard work - physically and emotionally. That's why you have to focus on helping those who are left, like mom Lilac and her baby Blossom, the lone survivor kitten.

We're happy to report that mom and baby are both thriving in their loving foster home until it's time for their vaccinations and surgery!

After that, it's off to the rescue and a forever home. These felines, and the HUNDREDS more who come through FOCA's door EVERY YEAR need your support. It's why we have fundraisers like Kitten Shower to keep us going. Every person that saved Lilac and Blossom are volunteers. The people giving them a temporary home now are volunteers. The funds we get to continue this work comes from people... LIKE YOU... You have the power to help us save Lilac, Blossom and 100s more!
