GRIP Training Institute is a nonprofit that provides restorative justice programs to incarcerated people across California to create the personal and systemic change to turn violence and suffering into opportunities for healing.

The GRIP program has been developed over 25 years of direct work with thousands of incarcerated people, mostly people with violent offenses, and their victims/survivors. The program started at San Quentin State Prison and has grown to include six more facilities including Avenal State Prison, Mule Creek State Prison, Correctional Training Facility, California Medical Facility, Substance Abuse and Training Facility, and most recently, Central California Women's Facility. GRIP facilitators guide incarcerated students through a journey where they are able to understand and transform their violent behavior, develop and practice mindfulness and emotional intelligence, and become peacemakers that contribute to healing in their own communities, both inside and outside the prison gates.

In the last 11 years, over 552 GRIP graduates have been released on parole. The recidivism rate of our graduates is 0.9% - in other words, our program has a 99.1% success rate at ending cycles of violence and suffering, and saves California residents millions of tax dollars each year that would have otherwise been spent on their continued incarceration. Our north star goal is to one day reach all 35,000 lifers without the possibility of parole through our program, and bring healing to scores of incarcerated individuals as well as survivors and victims.
