Another World is a free space for the people. Our mission is to build local, radical, democratic institutions and networks, including for alternatives to policing, neighborhood safety and self-determination, mutual aid, neighborhood assembly, and other vehicles of liberatory politics. As abolitionists, we are determined to innovate new ways of doing politics and to forge new ways of relating to one another.

Launched in June 2025 and run entirely by unpaid volunteer staffers, Another World (629 Nostrand Avenue) is open at least five days a week, nine hours a day. During the day, locals browse our free clothing store, food pantry, and lending library. Community members hang out, meet with friends, grab snacks, use the facilities, and relax. In the evenings and on weekends, we program events. Drawing from our connections across the movement, in our first year alone we have put on more than 250 events, including film screenings, community conversations, food distros, communal meals, toy drives, teach-ins, study groups, health and wellness clinics, trainings, workshops, skill-shares, musical performances, open mics, jam sessions, collage nights, stitching and sewing hours, repair cafes, children’s playdates and story hours, self-defense and yoga classes, and much more.

The neighborhood and the movement both need free spaces to gather and organize around. In meeting that shared need, Another World is building a political community rooted in the working class concerns of the neighborhood, in multiracial organizing, and in Black liberation theory and practice. As our community inevitably encounters hurt, harm, violence, deprivation, and need, we lean on our ethos of non-carceral care, and develop our abolitionist politic by navigating concrete, real-world situations. Simultaneously, we engage in deep, collective study to chart an abolitionist strategy that can build the militant people power to take us from our critique of the present to a future of care not cops. Another World runs on the passion, dedication, and experience of our organizers, drawn from across the movement and dedicated to building something big and new. We believe the movement suffers, at its grassroots, from a lack of imagination, innovation, and daring. We believe in the liberatory potential of Crown Heights, especially its long-term working class Black residents.
