Our team knows how to have fun, even when times are tough, and I love them for it!

I won't lie - as I finish my 40th year, I don't think I have ever felt more anxious about the future of the country I was born and raised in, or for the fragile state of democracies worldwide. I have worked with and for social justice organizations for most of my career as a fundraiser. It's not easy to see our society regress so quickly when I know how hard my colleagues are working to realize a truly inclusive and equitable society. But this work continues to give me hope, and an outlet for the political anxiety I may feel. When you're surrounded by smart people who are fighting so hard for a reality where we can all peacefully coexist, it never feels like all is lost.

My mother died when she was 44, and as I near that age myself, birthdays have prompted a lot of reflection. I wonder about the future she envisioned for me before she had to leave too soon. I wonder if she ever imagined that her daughters' rights would be backsliding when we reached her age. I wonder what her politics would have been, whether she would be an ally in this moment, and whether or not she'd be proud of the path I chose.

I won't ever be able to know these things, but its worth thinking about, as a reminder that our time is limited - and that all we can do is our part. These annual fundraisers are one piece of how I try to do my part - and I hope you see them as an opportunity to do your part, too.

Workers Center for Racial Justice is such a big part of what has kept me going this year. I am so grateful to get to spend my working hours doing something I know to be right, and I feel so lucky to be part of our supportive and brilliant team.
