Drama Club's mission is to consistently care for youth who are incarcerated or court-involved by creating space for them to thrive, using improv as their guide.

Youth participants in Drama Club use the rules of improv as a guide to safely express themselves, process challenging times in their lives, and discover new paths out of justice involvement. Drama Club provides 450 classes each year reaching nearly 800 young people aged 13-25. Classes are always free to participants.

When improv is rooted in a curriculum that focuses on strengthening self-concept and the ability to apply learned skills to real-life situations, and when the curriculum is delivered by skilled Teaching Artists supported by a Social Worker and MSW Interns and Mentors some of whom were formerly incarcerated and all of whom understand the importance of mentorship in the development of self-concept, then improv is a powerful intervention for transformation.

Drama Club is recognized by New York City’s City Council, the Administration of Children Services, the Department of Correction, the Department of Probation, the Department of Youth and Community Development, and the Department of Education. We are organizational partners with Carnegie Hall, NeON Arts, The Door, The Wooster Group, Rattlestick Theater, Youth Inc., and SparkYouth. Drama Club partners with Columbia University, Fordham University and Hunter College Schools of Social Work.
