1804 Fund
We are raising funds to buy a piece of land, that will be named "Mimi's Garden" for Food Indy educational programs and a community gathering space. This infrastructure will allow us to retain, nourish, expand, and cultivate food culture in the neighborhoods we serve.
We invite you to help make this expansion a reality as we position Food Indy for the next decade and future generations. Give $1804.00, or any increment of the number 1804, in honor of Suzette "Mimi" Bertrand (1932-2022) gardener, chef, and matriarch of the Bay Area Haitian community.
Why 1804?
1804 was the first year that Haiti flew the flag of independence and became the first Black republic established by formerly enslaved people. This fund is specifically to honor thier contributions to sovereignty, food culture, and maintaining multigenerational learning.
Your gift to the 1804 Fund will help us purchase our gathering space and continue Mimi’s decades-long legacy.
All gifts of $1,000 or more will be listed on a plaque in our garden and gifts of $2,500 or more may be designated to specific aspects of the project.
