BBBS has been a part of my life since my college days in Atlanta, GA. Since then I have been a big to 3 girls - and am now waiting to be matched with my 4th "little." My first "little" is now a grown up - a married mom of 3. She has a PhD in education and is a principal at an Atlanta area school. I like to think I played a tiny part on her path to success. I have also served on the BBBS Board of Directors in 3 cities - Davenport, IA, Nashville, TN and now in Charlotte, NC.
I am passionate about BBBS for three reasons:
- Don't we wish all kids had great role models? All of the Littles in our program have a loving parent or grandparent by their side, but it takes a village to show kids how to find their place in this big world.
- Selfishly I know what the data says - kids with dedicated mentors do better in school and are more likely to be productive grownups. Productive grown ups are good for society!
- Lastly, back to the data, if we want to lift up under served communities - mentoring is the most direct way I know to do that. Mentoring is about showing, teaching, giving, listening. It is the way we become our better selves.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the virtual breakfast, Carolyn
