The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Michael Nowak open the 2023-24 season with an evening of music that explores the depths of the human experience. Titan of Italian opera Guiseppe Verdi depicts fiery love destined for tragedy in the Overture to La Forza Del Destino. The Chairman Dances by modern composer John Adams offers a vignette of a ubiquitous historical figure. And Johannes Brahms explores melancholy, longing, and love in Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73. Enjoy the passions and pains of these celebrated composers with the expert performers of the Santa Maria Philharmonic.

The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra chamber players and Maestro Michael Nowak welcome one and all to a celebration of Baroque composers, a holiday season tradition for the Philharmonic. The program features the orchestral music of Johann Sebastian Bach, the icon of the Baroque style and progenitor of the symphonic art music tradition, along with his compatriot in the Germanic style, George Frederic Handel. The influential Italian composers Antonio Vivaldi and Archangelo Corelli will share the stage with Bach and Handel, highlighting the harmonic inventiveness and melodic genius on display in the Italian concerto grosso. Members of the Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra will display their skill in the intricate solo parts and rousing ensemble work, all under the careful baton of Maestro Michael Nowak.

Third Season Concert - In the Classical Style

Feb 24, 2024 (7:30 pm) @ Grace Baptist Church

The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Michael Nowak celebrate the artistry and genius of three of Classical music’s greatest composers in the penultimate season concert. The iconic Overture to Marriage of Figaro from legendary Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will open the evening, followed by the Pulcinella Suite from the late-Romantic and early modern era Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. According to Maestro Nowak, Mozart and Stravinsky are two composers “who just go well together.” The evening closes with guest piano soloist Robert Thies returning for a performance of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, a piece which exemplifies Beethoven as both a master of the neoClassical style and transformative Romantic figure.

Program:

Wolfang Amadeus Mozart Overture to Marriage of Figaro
Igor Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite
Ludwig Van Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58
