“I, Dave, take you, Kathy, to be my wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish always.”

More than 50 years ago, Dave and Kathy vowed to be there for one another. Through the years they have lived an active and social life. They’ve raised a family, traveled, welcomed grandkids, and enjoyed a wide circle of friends and community. Dave reflects, “We were living the good life, and then all of a sudden this Whammy.”

Kathy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

This diagnosis changes everything, for everyone. Caring for a loved one as their memories fade requires time, energy, and resources that place tremendous strain on the care partner. As involvement in social activities and the community diminish, isolation and feelings of loneliness and despair are common for those diagnosed.

While this diagnosis shook Dave and Kathy’s lives, they are far from being alone on this journey. The Cincinnati tri-state has over 151,000 individuals either living with dementia or caring for a loved one who does. These are our families, our friends, and our neighbors. A dementia diagnosis comes with numerous challenges, from navigating complex healthcare systems to managing the emotional and practical aspects of caregiving, in addition to isolation and loneliness. The impact of a dementia diagnosis affects the entire support network and community at large. Despite efforts to address support systems, there remains a pressing need for comprehensive engagement programming tailored to the unique needs of individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

That is why I created the Giving Voice Foundation, along with my husband, Cody. I grew up watching my loved ones and so many others deal with dementia. From those experiences, I decided to dedicate my life to helping people with memory issues and their families. The Giving Voice Foundation aims to bridge gaps and address urgent needs by offering tailored programs and services that consider the diverse needs of individuals with dementia and caregivers. For me, seeing folks come together and realize they are not alone, and learn from each other's shared experiences is a really powerful part of our programming.

Kathy agrees, “Monday is my favorite day of the week. I just enjoy these people. I love it.”

Kathy is referring to Creative Connections, a weekly music and movement program with a simultaneous caregiver support group that she and Dave attend. Creative Connections allows local individuals impacted by dementia to connect through music and movement in a group setting, which is where the magic happens, Kathy says. “They play an old song, and all the words come back..they just pop in my head. Oh, I love it and it's such a success story for me!” While Kathy and her peers are connecting and moving, Dave and other caregivers are able to participate in a caregiver support group receiving education, support, and respite in a separate room. Dave is clear, “this group is supportive for us, both from a social and an intellectual standpoint. We talk about issues that are going on, experiences, and particularly when somebody has a problem, it just seems like someone else has experienced that same issue, and that helps take away some of the fear and frustration a diagnosis can bring. I feel like if somebody else can get through it, then I can too.”
