I am running in memory of Charlie, my sweet, spirited, red-haired nephew who died on October 30, 2020 at the age of 6 from diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor, a pediatric brain and spinal cord cancer. I am also running in honor of Charlie’s parents, my brother and sister-in-law, who are the strongest people I know having lived through his cancer, the brutal and failed treatments, and now the loss of their child. Charlie was silly, cuddly, and adored his lovey blanket “Balopoly,” soft-serve ice cream, and most of all his parents. Charlie’s magic made me want to become a parent myself. I miss him every day. More effective treatments are needed to support children who suffer a devastating diagnosis like Charlie’s, and more funding is needed for the research to develop such treatments. I am running the Sam Day Buddy Run because the funds it raises for pediatric cancer research can ultimately support children like Charlie who need promising treatments.
