A community health worker (CHW) is a trusted member of a community and has an extremely close relationship and understanding of the needs of the people in that community. A CHW serves as a liaison and link with healthcare, social services, and the community to facilitate access to services, improving the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. They also build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy.

OSCI community health workers have identified significant needs in the spinal cord injury community that are not being met through traditional support avenues like government programs and health insurance. Items needed for success in daily life like ramps, shower chairs, mobility aids, and more are not covered by traditional programs.

Every injury is different and every individual has different needs. Our CHWs identify those needs and these funds give us the ability to provide the tools necessary for individuals with a spinal cord injury to live more independently and thrive.
