Roar Week

The Lakewood High student body has decided to use our Tiger Power to support Colorado-based nonprofit NIVAS during this year’s Roar Week! NIVAS has been working to change the narrative for families suffering in the face of poverty and adversity in Nepal for more than 11 years. Founded by a group of front range CO architects and builders, their mission is to help people living in extreme poverty find dignity, strength, and security through the process of becoming homeowners.

About Nepal

Their work is focused in Nepal where the landscape is stunning, yet structural barriers and difficult economic conditions force many women and their children into unsafe and seemingly irrevocable circumstances. Increasingly more women-led families are experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. For women and kids, lack of secure housing leads to significant increases in gender-based violence, risk of human trafficking, child marriage, poor mental and physical health, and poverty. At the same time, entire communities suffer in the face of natural disasters and lack economic opportunity.

What We’re Raising Funds For

Lakewood High is collaborating with NIVAS to provide a 3-part program in Western Nepal to address *Disaster-Resiliency, *Homelessness, and *Economic Insecurity.

Women and Youth Construction Training Program

Women, teens, and young adults will be provided full tuition to a 6 week on-the-job training course to learn disaster-resilient construction. This comprehensive program equips participants with valuable skills in building techniques that can withstand earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. Through hands-on experience and expert guidance, trainees gain practical and transferable skills to work on construction projects throughout the region. A viable career option in Western Nepal.

New Home Construction for Single Moms & Kids

Two single mothers will build brand new, privately owned, disaster-resilient homes for themselves and their children who are facing homelessness. Local NIVAS team members will ensure land security through land rights advocacy. Each homeowner will provide her sweat equity by working on the job throughout the construction process.

Business Training and Seed Capital

Finally, together we’ll galvanize these single mothers’ exit from poverty by providing training and seed capital to launch their new home businesses. From goat farming to fashion tailoring, each mother will choose which context-relevant business activity interests her most and our program will support her new business launch.
