Since 2019, the Darryl Chappell Foundation has delivered a total giving impact of over $130,000 in support of 69 artists. We empower artists through grants and by hiring artists to speak or mentor. We envision artists working together to transform their local communities through art.

Might you help provide funding for one Artist-in-Residence in 2025? We seek to raise $5,500 by December 31, 2024. The artist-in-residence receives a $5,000 stipend, and our partner organization receives $500 for administering the open call for artists. The artist-in-residence also receives a furnished apartment, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and skilled staff.

The mission of the Darryl Chappell Foundation is to empower Afrodescendant artists to achieve their highest potential. Our learning pathway focuses on starting strong, developing youth, centering artists, and mentorship. We accomplish this by funding Artists-in-Residence, facilitating Artists Talks, offering a Mentorship Program, Funding Public Art, and curating an online Artists Marketplace.

As we reflect on the impact of our work, we are reminded of the transformative power of providing artists with an opportunity to focus on their passion for creating art at a time and place of their choosing.

Impact Highlights:

Funded 9 Artists-in-Residence (Light Work, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, Ogden Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art)

Provided 80 hours of mentorship for artists, mentors paid $75/hour (mentors: Lola Flash, Robin Holder, Earlie Hudnall Jr, Gary Burnley)

Awarded 36 individual artist community grants, median payout of $1,000 (partnership with the Bronx Documentary Center and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art)

Issued 3 Artists of the Year awards (2022, 2023, and 2024), totaling $1,000 each (Gadiel Rivera Herrera '22, Mildor Chevalier '23, Joiri Minaya '24)
