Nonprofit news relies on your support. Right now, every dollar you give to support Jax Today is matched dollar for dollar by NewsMatch, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and local donors Katharine and David Loeb — when you add those three matches, every dollar you give to power our local, community-powered news and information counts as four dollars.

On last year’s Giving Tuesday, with your help, we raised more than $8,000. This year, with more of you subscribed and even more urgency behind our mission, we are aiming for $10,000 (before matching funds) from 150 donors by midnight on Tuesday, December 2 (Giving Tuesday – or as we like to call it, #GivingNewsDay).

Why it matters: When nonpartisan information sources disappear, communities suffer. That’s why we launched Jacksonville Today, to keep local information strong, factual, and accessible to everyone. Academic studies show a direct connection between less local information-gathering from reliable sources and several harmful outcomes:

Higher local government corruption (no one watching!) and higher tax costs;
Lower voter turnout (You might not vote on what you don’t know about);
Nonpartisan local elections becoming more partisan (When the only info you get is biased…);
Misinformation and disinformation balloon to fill the real information gap (thanks, social media echo chambers).
