It’s time for our annual purchase of hay! We’re stocking up for the year to keep our rabbits, pigs, and goats happy, healthy, and fed. Hay is a staple for our residents: rabbits depend on it for healthy digestion, and our goats and pigs rely on it for both nourishment and bedding. With so many mouths to feed, our hay bill adds up quickly.

This year, our goal is to raise $5,000 to cover our hay costs. Every dollar helps us provide the fresh, quality hay our animals deserve.

$8 feeds rabbits hay for a day
$30 feeds pigs, rabbits and goats hay for approximately two days
$55 feeds rabbits hay for approximately a week
$100 provides our pigs, rabbits, and goats with hay for a week
$200 stocks hay for everyone for two weeks
$300+ makes a huge impact toward our seasonal hay bill

Since 1995 Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary (GLRS) has provided a safe haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals. We were formerly known as “PigHoppers,” rescuing various breeds of pigs, rabbits, and other animal. In 2003, finding that there was an overwhelming need in our area to provide for domestic rabbits in particular, we changed our name and focus to domestic rabbits.

We rescue rabbits from all across Michigan, and when able, from other areas of the United States as well. Upon their arrival at GLRS the rabbits are given medical care if needed and are spayed or neutered, after which they are ready to meet their potential adoptors! GLRS is a no-kill facility. Those rabbits who are not eligible for adoption, either due to health or temperament, live out their lives peacefully at the sanctuary.

In addition to providing a safe and loving environment, GLRS also strives to educate the public about domestic rabbits, including rabbit care and behavior. Just as with cats and dogs, a rabbit may not be the best furry companion for a family. Our hope is that our educational efforts will mean fewer rabbits needing our help in the future.

Visiting the Sanctuary: We welcome visitors and are very excited to share the wonders of the sanctuary, however, we are not open to the public on a daily basis. Tours are available by appointment during the spring, summer, and early fall. Please email us to schedule a visit. To help us continue providing a safe haven for the animals, we request a donation of $20.00 per tour group of the sanctuary.
