Fund the Need Campaign – Building a Year-Round Shelter for Dare County

In Dare County, homelessness is a growing reality that many people do not see—but it exists in our community every day. Our organization operates the only homeless shelter in the county, and currently we are only able to provide emergency shelter to 18 men and women from November through April each year. For many individuals' experiencing homelessness, that leaves six months of the year with no safe place to go.

The need is increasing. This season alone, we have seen a 25% increase in beds used compared to last year. More people than ever are seeking help, and the demand continues to grow. These are not strangers from somewhere else—these are our neighbors. They are the same people who serve meals in local restaurants, bag groceries, stock store shelves, maintain our landscapes, and help build the places we love. Homelessness does not discriminate.

Now more than ever, Dare County needs a year-round shelter.

We are taking the first step toward making that vision a reality. Our organization is currently under contract to purchase land in Kill Devil Hills where we plan to build a permanent, year-round homeless shelter to serve individuals in need throughout the entire year—not just during the winter months.

But we cannot do it alone.
