Your Local Wiregrass 2-1-1 Celebrates February 11th as National 2-1-1 Day

United Way Worldwide has declared February 11th as National 2-1-1 Day by recognizing the powerful resource that local 2-1-1 call centers are to connecting residents to crucial health and social services throughout the year. Every day thousands of people across the U.S. turn to 2-1-1 for information and support—whether financial, domestic, health or disaster-related. 2-1-1 is a free, confidential referral and information service that connects people from all communities and of all ages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 2-1-1 is a free service and available throughout the U.S. by phone, text, chat and web. Reaching out to 2-1-1 connects you to a community resource specialist in your area who can help you find services and resources that are available to you locally and provide critical services that can improve and save lives.

2-1-1 was first launched by United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta in 1997 and is spearheaded by United Ways and information & referral agencies in states and local communities. United Ways have a long-standing tradition of commitment to funding information and referral (I&R) services in their respective communities. Approximately 95% of people living in the U.S. now have access to the 2-1-1 service. All 67 counties in Alabama have 24/7 access to 2-1-1 including seven counties in the Wiregrass area.

For 14 years now, the local Wiregrass 2-1-1 program with a contact center in Dothan has been bringing people and services together. Over 204,000 calls have been answered and almost 363,000 referrals for those calls were provided to programs that help people living right here in our local communities. Like helping a gentleman obtain a C-Pap machine because he had no healthcare coverage, helping a cancer survivor that texted 2-1-1 connect with a program to donate head coverings, helping a veteran locate much needed housing or helping a Louisiana Fire Fighter evacuee to coordinate a supply drive for those back home that were devastated by Hurricane Ida.
