OUR STORY

21 Vets Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 2019 by Daniel J. Pippin, a 100% total and permanent disabled combat veteran with over 25 years of government service, whose vision, determination, and personal military experiences created a fertile soil for the ongoing growth and research aimed to reduce our Veteran suicide rates. After years of struggling with post-traumatic stress, further complicated by the inability to receive adequate and timely care, Daniel enrolled in a Masters program in psychology with a personal mission to better understand his own struggles. This led to his discovery of a deep passion for psychology and as part of his doctorate research, he developed 21 Vets Incorporated, as a nonprofit organization, and coined the phrase “Helping Our Warriors Heal.” Additionally, in 2011, Daniel found that writing poetry helped him cope with his post-traumatic stress. In hopes this could help others, he started the website “CombatPoetry” where Veterans could write for relief. To his amazement, thousands of poems were written and shared by Veterans. In 2024, he reestablished this concept as part of the 21 Vets program. Daniel is invested in lifelong learning with a significant interest in leadership training. He is a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows program at Harvard Kennedy School, Negotiation and Leadership program at Harvard Law School, and the Executive Leadership program at Cornell University. His passion is helping and investing in his fellow Veterans.

In 2020, Sahar Osmani, a decorated U.S. Air Force officer with multiple deployments, joined 21 Vets as the Chief Executive Officer and Board Member. Sahar recently served as a Commander during Operation Allies Refuge, the largest non-combatant evacuation operation in American history. This humanitarian mission enabled more than 120,000 Afghan citizens to evacuate Afghanistan as Kabul fell to Taliban control. Sahar personally led a team of Special Agents directly responsible for vetting over 64,000 Afghan evacuees who landed at Al Udeid Air Base in their efforts of seeking asylum. While working in excess of 20-hour days for 90 consecutive days, in a traumatic and emotional event, Sahar not only encountered some of her extended family as they escaped Afghanistan within mere hours of the Taliban seizing the airfield, but she met her paternal aunt for the very first time during an encounter on the flight line at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Sahar is a first-generation Afghan American born and raised in California. She is a Rangel scholar, two-time Lance P. Sijan award winner, and three-time Company Grade Officer of the Year award winner. While attending San Diego State University, Sahar was the first founding President of Coaching Corps, a national program designed to improve the health, educational and social outcomes for kids living in struggling communities through the power of service and sports. While studying advanced Arabic abroad, Sahar served as the Assistant to the Director at ReClaim Childhood, a program designed to inspire a new generation of leaders and empowering girls and women through sports. Her extensive leadership experiences, moral character, lifelong passion to help others, and personal experience battling and seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress are what led us to nominate and choose her to formally direct and guide 21 Vets.

WHY OUR VETERANS NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Since 2001, between 1.9 and 3.0 million service members have served in hostile regions and many of them deployed more than once. During this period, nearly 7,100 lost their lives while deployed during these operations. Unfortunately, prolonged exposure to combat-related stress over multiple rotations is disproportionately high compared with the physical injuries of combat. During this same period, an estimated 7,700 Veterans were lost to suicide every single year - for over 23 consecutive years. This is a staggering and unacceptable number of 176,295 Veteran suicides.

To put this into perspective, 21 Veterans commit suicide every single day! Extensive studies demonstrate this is not a statistic… this is very real, and this number has remained consistent since 2001. This unacceptable rate nearly 2.5 times the U.S. non-veteran population statistics on suicide. Our Veteran community is unquestionably battling a suicide epidemic and we can no longer ignore their silent struggles.

We pray that you understand, although we are a voluntary force, our battles do not end when we return home. Our Veterans' struggles are very real and they continue to face post-deployment healthcare issues. They carry with them the invisible wounds of combat operations.

We, as a Nation, must come together and rally around the men and women that fought for our freedoms. We must fight to save those who have sacrificed and lost in the name of defending our great Nation. This year, 21 Vets celebrates our ability to refocus our efforts and overcome the difficulties and significant limitations we all faced during the COVID-19 restrictions.

In 2019, Daniel chose the name "21 Vets" as a way to directly highlight the sheer significance of this suicide epidemic and to tie in the 'invisible wounds' our Veterans have silently battled since 2001.

Under the 21 Vets model, Daniel envisions a revolutionary approach to the healthcare system and the direct needs of our Veterans needs. 21 Vets directly invests in our Nation’s heroes by providing timely, coordinated, co-located, and integrated Veteran-centered care options. We are proud to have a professional and volunteer staff that hold themselves accountable to the Veteran-centered approach which directly results in a more effective rehabilitation process. We are led and managed by a team of Veterans!

Our vision is to reduce Veteran suicide rates nationwide through a patient-centered care program tailored to the Veteran.

Our mission is to enable Veterans to overcome their Invisible Wounds and live to fight another day.
