As first-generation Efik growing up in the U.S., I have been deeply involved with the Efik community since my youth. Some of my fondest memories were with my father as a teenager, as I joined him at monthly Efik Association meetings in Houston. What I understood about the organization was that it was a place for Efiks to gather and build community amongst one another. My first opportunity to “serve” the community was when the Houston Chapter launched in 1995/1996. I had the opportunity to participate as a dancer and recall the opportunity to engage with Efik elders as we learned various dances like the Ekombi and Moninkim. I worked with my father to identify resources to support our cultural immersion and even helped with the design and assembling of the cultural costumes that we would use to perform.
My father's passing really ignited my intentionality around preserving and sharing my Efik culture. To honor his memory and continue to serve in an organization that he poured into since it's inception, I have decided to run for National Vice President. If you know me you know service is important to me.
As part of my campaign it is my hope that you will join me in raising $2500 for ENA, Inc. in honor of my father and to serve this community.
I hope you will join me in my quest to serve and honor my Efik culture.
With graditude,
Sandy-Asari Hogan
Candidate for Vice President
Efik National Association, Inc.
