Melissa Dickison's Story

Just over three years ago, on July 23, 2021, we lost Erik to an accidental fentanyl overdose. Erik fought addiction for 10 years before this devastating disease took him from those who loved him dearly. During those years, he experienced periods of sobriety and dedicated himself to the recovery community, striving to help others reclaim their lives from addiction. Erik was truly unique—charming, caring, a friend to everyone, and a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. After his passing, countless stories emerged of how he had saved lives—through his selfless friendship and even by performing CPR for those he lived with in sober housing. Erik’s life mattered, and my family and I committed to honoring his legacy by keeping his name alive and raising awareness about supporting organizations that help addicts recover. I want to prevent other families from experiencing the pain of losing a loved one to this terrible disease. For nearly 3 years, I’ve served on the board of Recovery is Happening, and connecting with others who share the same passion for ending this epidemic has been one of the few therapeutic outlets for me since losing my brother. Addiction and relapse carry so much shame, and it’s incredibly hard to take the first steps toward recovery. Recovery is Happening employs Peer Recovery Specialists who guide those struggling, helping them take necessary steps—whether it’s paying fines, getting their license back, attending meetings, or applying for a job—to regain control of their lives. This crucial work shows those struggling that they have an advocate and that recovery is possible. On September 7th, Recovery is Happening will hold their annual Rally for Recovery 5K at Soldier’s Field, and I’m fundraising for this event in honor of my beautiful, hilarious, larger-than-life baby brother, Erik. I truly appreciate any contribution you’re willing to make to support this organization and the tireless work they’re doing to help those battling this difficult disease.
