Sean Locke was a fellow student of my children at St. Mark’s High School in Wilmington, Delaware. Sean was an All-State basketball and baseball player, played basketball on scholarship at the University of Delaware and got to play in the NCAA Tournament – guarded Draymond Green in a tournament game. Sean was also an outstanding student, a highly popular kid who was voted as Student of the Year in High School. I heard Sean speak at one of my daughters’ senior sports banquet about overcoming adversity – Sean had torn his ACL and missed his senior year of high school basketball, and was not sure he would play in college. Sean did an incredible job. He had a great job in commercial real estate development after graduation. He had it all.
Just a few months after I heard him speak, Sean committed suicide. He had silently been battling anxiety and depression for many years.
Chris Locke, Sean’s father, and his family have created the SL24: Unlocke The Light foundation to help young adults struggling with mental health issues. In just over five years, they have raised over $3MM through various events (including an annual basketball tournament that ICS and IM Group have sponsored) and purchased the house where Sean lived in college. That house is now “Sean’s House”, a safe place where students can gather and seek help from others as well as trained counselors who are on staff 24/7/365. Since the house opened in October 2020, over 20,000 people have visited, and they are credited with preventing 87 suicides.
