GoPhilanthropic Foundation is an organization very close to my heart, one that I am thankful to be a part. GoPhil supports grassroots organizations worldwide who are truly transforming their communities and tackling some of the most challenging issues of our time; human trafficking, child labor, gender inequality, early marriage and a lack of access to health care and education found in indigenous communities.

This holiday season I ask you to join me in supporting SPID-SMS, a dedicated team of social workers advocating for some of the world’s most vulnerable.

SPID-SMS is located in the red light district in New Delhi, India with an estimated 95+ brothels and 4,000 sex workers. Most of the women working are trafficked into prostitution and held against their will. The SPID-SMS center was established in 1991 to provide a safe and nurturing space for the children of these women, to receive care, nutrition and education away from the high-risk environment of the brothels.

Children of sex workers are the most vulnerable as they face extreme prejudice, discrimination and structural inequities. SPID-SMS is the only organization in the area providing 24-hour shelter, protection, education and nutrition to these children.

Even with the support of the center, it was observed that once daughters of sex workers turned eighteen, they became more vulnerable to exploitation and more likely to follow in their mother’s footsteps. In 2016, After Care Girl’s Home for Hope was established for graduates from the SPID-SMS center as a stepping stone to a self-reliant life. These girls are provided additional support to continue their education, receive career guidance, and skills to secure carefully vetted jobs in Delhi.

Along with their intensive work with children and young women, the SPID-SMS team also conducts daily outreach work in the brothels, setting up basic health care clinics, vaccination drives, supporting others and identifying at-risk children in need of support.

Working with this very stigmatized population SPID-SMS has always struggled to raise support. The pandemic has only intensified the situation. The SPID-SMS center is crucial for these children to survive the pandemic and escape the risk of being forced into sex work themselves.
