Although cancer kills more American children than any other disease, only two states had appropriated funding for childhood cancer research in 2017. In response to this disparity, the American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) created our What About Kids State Research Initiative. In 2018, Kentucky became ACCO’s first state to sign childhood cancer legislation into law, with an associated $5 million appropriation for the biennium.

Since then, ACCO has taken the lead in securing state-based funding for childhood cancer research. To date, seven states (PA, NJ, MD, NE, VA, NY, KY) are designating funds to childhood cancer research with more than $100 million secured. States play a critical role in overcoming the national disparity between adult and childhood cancer research and treatment, and these states are rising to that challenge.

None of these state research funds go to ACCO. We are dependent upon the donations of individuals to continue this transformative work which brings hope for new treatments and cures for children with cancer.
