Resurface our Rink Campaign

It’s been over three decades, and Community Recreational Center has been resurfacing the ice with its original ice Olympia. After so many years it is time to move her slowly into retirement and be placed in a warm and comfortable home, built for aging Zambonis and Olympias.

Over this time she has had a new engine, three transmissions, multiple starters, batteries, Alternators, tires, spark plugs, hydraulic lines, new blades, new hydraulic motors, two paint jobs and recently the face lift of a stage coach wrap to cover her wrinkles and rust.

Community Recreational Center prides itself on controlling cost of operations and keeps its annual budget designed to hold pricing. Through this business plan we have been able to not increase fees for nearly five years. Instead, we have expanded programming to generate more revenue to hold costs. However, this is even more hours of operations which means more work for the ice resurfacing Olympia.

If we lose the use of the Olympia we also lose the ability to produce practice and game ice. We would like to be proactive and launch a campaign for a replacement machine and outdoor heated garage within a budget of $500,000.

To show our commitment to this project Andy Sciarabba is personally pledging $250,000 of a matching donation to show the community our commitment from the board towards this campaign and also our continuing control of rates and costs.

A benefit of the new ice surfacer which you can see when entering the facility is air quality control with zero carbon emissions. In the 1990’s machines were only available with either gas or propane. Replacement machines run on lithium batteries massively improving the air quality for players and spectators. However, this comes with an additional cost as the unit requires a warm room for the charging capability of the machine. So, CRC requires not only the new state of the art ice resurfacer, but also a 30 by 40 building to store it while charging.

The machine also has many new features not offered by Olympia or Zamboni to improve ice quality at a much faster and economical rate. Most machines require ice temp around 170 degrees. The Mammoth makes ice at 90 degrees, lower heat means less load on compressors which decreases the energy needed to convert the water to ice saving electricity. The unit also possesses the ability to over flood the ice from the machine not requiring additional staff to hand flood the ice with hoses savings of time and labor.
