Barneby was the very first soul welcomed into Soulstride Sanctuary. At just a year and a half old, he had already faced uncertainty and the very real risk of ending up in dangerous hands at a kill-buyer–heavy auction. When we met him, he was gentle, nervous, and clearly searching for safety. We knew immediately he was meant to come home with us.

Born in May 2024 and rescued from the Shipshewana Auction on November 28, 2025, Barneby arrived with a significant congenital right foot drop. While this condition was present from birth, we believe early nutritional deprivation, not lack of calories, but lack of proper minerals and nourishment, played a major role in how his body developed.

Today, Barneby is learning what consistency feels like. He is beginning to trust, to play, and to receive care without fear, likely for the first time in his life.
